Branford

$10,090 to Connecticut Society, Sons Of American Revolution for Planning for the Future of Nathan Hale's Schoolhouses

The Connecticut Society of the Sons of the American Revolution received funding to plan two long-term exhibitions on Connecticut State Hero, Nathan Hale that will be installed in two schoolhouses where Hale taught. The exhibitions are planned to coincide with the opening of the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary War Road in 2006.

Essex

$4,930 to Connecticut River Museum for The Camera's Coast

In keeping with its maritime theme, the Connecticut River Museum received funding to host "The Camera's Coast," an exhibition of historic photographs and artifacts that depict New England's maritime history. The exhibition combines materials from a traveling exhibition created by the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities with a selection of local maritime scenes from the museum and area collections.

Hartford

$21,500 to Antiquarian and Landmarks Society for The Antiquarian & Landmanks Educational Partnership

The Antiquarian and Landmarks Society received technical assistance support to develop a unified educational strategy to attract and serve school and organized youth audiences. Educational consultants will work with A&L staff to develop both a general strategy for the organization as well as specific recommendations for A&L's sites located in Greater Hartford, New London, Litchfield, and Tolland counties. The CHC, with the Greater Hartford Arts Council, previously awarded grants to A&L under its Heritage Advancement Program to support a full time Education Coordinator, who will carry out specific programming identified through this planning process.

Litchfield

$5,000 to Litchfield Historical Society for The Ties that Bind: Quilts from a Material Culture Perspective

The Litchfield Historical Society received professional development support to host a day-long symposium on the historical significance of quilts and what they can tell us about material culture in the past. The symposium, attended by historians, researchers and museum staff, features scholarly presentations, interactive workshops and a gallery tour of the society's exhibition The Ties that Bind: A Sampler of Litchfield County Quilts.

Madison

$4,980 to Deacon John Grave, Inc. for Trading Places: Financing Every-Day Life for a Madison Family, 1685-1826

The Deacon John Grave Foundation received funding to plan an exhibition on early New England economic life with a special focus on the history of the Deacon John Grave House, its many generations of the Grave family and its local roots in the town of Madison. Scheduled to open in May of 2005, the exhibition will use documents and period artifacts to portray the family and the town as microcosms of New England's early economic life.

Mystic

$3,157 to Denison Society for Cataloguing the Denison Society's Archives & Artifacts

The Denison Society, stewards of the Denison Homestead in Mystic, received funding to engage a professional museum cataloguer to help develop a system to access and manage the Society's historic artifacts. The cataloger will create a database of artifacts, documents, photographs and books to facilitate research as the society works towards increasing prgoramming, membership and visitation at the museum.

New Haven

$3,272  to ARTE, INC. for Our History/Here I Stay Nuestra Historia/Aqui Me Quedo

ARTE, Inc., recevied funding to create an exhibition on Puerto Rican history and culture at the New Haven Colony Historical Society. The exhibition includes two galleries that showcase and explore the rich culture, history and influence of Puerto Rican migration to New Haven and Connecticut.

New London

$5,000 to New London Main Street Corporation for New London Through Time and Place

New London Main Street received funding to research and develop a living history play based on three New London historic sites--Hempsted Houses, Shaw-Perkins Mansion and the Custom House Maritime Museum--to bring alive the rich history of the city. The play will be performed during New London's annual Celebration of Lights & Song by the Sea.

Simsbury

$5,000 to Simsbury Historical Society for A Historical Perspective: African American and West Indian Tobacco Workers in Connecticut

The Simsbury Historical Society was awarded funding to conduct an in-depth historical study of Americans of African decent who worked in Connecticut's tabacco industry from 1900 to 2000. The society's research findings will be used to create a traveling exhibition that will tour the state next year in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institutions "Barn Again!" exhibition. The "Barn Again!" tour in Connecticut is also sponsored by the Connecticut Humanities Council.

Wethersfield

$5,000 to Wethersfield Historical Society for Connecticut Rocks!

The Wethersfield Historical Society received funding to develop and install an exhibition at the Society's Keeney Center on Connecticut's geology and its impact on human settlement in the state. The CHC also provided $5,000 in planning support for the project.
