Hill, George Canning. Gen. Israel Putnam. New York: R. Worthington, 1884. In­spirational, typical nineteenth-century biography in Sparks' American Biog­raphy series.

Humphreys, David. An Essay on the Life of the Honorable Major General Israel Putnam. Boston, 1818. The author, who knew Putnam well, traces "the path of glory from the cradle of obscurity to the summit of elevation, . . . ." etc., etc. The section on Bunker Hill and anecdotes in the appendix were written by Samuel Swett.
