Hyman, Sidney. The Lives of William Benton. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1970. This is not an authorized biography, but Hyman had the cooperation of Benton and access to all his papers, private and public. Hyman notes, "When he saw an early draft ... he proceeded in the fashion of a Puritan diarest to write me a twelve-page, single-spaced letter detailing all the vices of which he felt he was guilty."
